Abstract

442,138. Bowden mechanism; flexible shafts and tubing. TONDEUR, R., 25, Denbigh Terrace, Notting Hill, and BOWDEN (ENGINEERS), Ltd., Victoria Road, Willesden Junction, both in London. July 30, 1934, No. 22199. [Classes 80 (ii) and 80 (iii)] [See also Group XXVIII] Flexible tubing particularly applicable as the inner or outer member of Bowden mechanism or as the outer casing of flexible shafting, comprises one or more inner shells or layers a each consisting of two or more closely interwound relatively laterally displaceable coils, the length of which remains substantially constant, and one or more outer shells or layers b consisting of wires of round or other suitable section wound with coarse pitch, the inner and outer shells or layers being permanently secured together at their ends. The inner shell may be constructed as described in Specification 412,367, e.g. with wires of reversed trapezoidal crosssection, or with one of trapezoidal and the other of round cross-section, or with four or more even numbers of coils of appropriate section. The pitch of the coils of the shell b is large compared with that of the coils of the shell a, and where a number of shells a, b are employed both may be wound of the same or of opposite hand. The inner shells or layers may be produced by the method described in Specification 428,937, [Group XXII].
