Abstract
350,390. Flexible tubes. GRINT, W. H. and SUPERFLEXIT, Ltd., 110, Cannon Street, London. Feb. 27, 1930, No. 38443. Divided on 349,965. [Class 99 (ii).] Flexible tubes are made by extruding cellulosic material around a continuously-fed wire helix. In Fig. 1 cellulosic material in a bath 11 passes through a nozzle 12 past the end of a guiding tube 13 for the wire helix 14. The coated helix 14 passes into a setting bath 15. The cellulosic material is contracted on to the helix 14, the surplus material forming pleats extending longitudinally of the tube, by means of opposed rollers 18, 19. The rollers may be rotated about the axis of the tube or the helix may be screwed into the tube 13. The rollers 18, 19 may be located in the bath. Alternatively the contraction may be effected by winding an outer helix on to the tube with its convolutions lying between those of the inner helix. This outer helix may be a permanent binder as described in Specification 206,046, [Class 99 (ii), Pipes, tubes, &c.], or a temporary binder as described in Specification 349,965 may be used. In a modification, Fig. 2, the helix 14 is fed screwwise into a groove 23 formed between the outer shell 20 and the inner core 21 of a die. Ducts 25, 26 communicate with the groove 23 and through them a cellulosic and if necessary a hardening agent is supplied. On leaving the die the tube may be passed into a bath as shown at 15 in Fig. 1. The tubes may be protected by layers of canvas, rubber, waterproof material and outer layers of canvas. An outer binder may also be added, which may be encased by a braided or woven covering.
