Abstract
686,408. Making tubes. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES, Ltd. April 17, 1951 [April 17, 1950], No. 9399/50. Class 83 (ii). [Also in Groups XXXII and XXXVI] A metal strip 9, e.g. of brass, copper or steel, is drawn from a supply reel 6 and passes under a guide roller 12 to a die 13 which bends the strip transversely to form a tube 14, and a metal strip 10 and a rubber strip 11 draw-n from supply reels 7, 8 are brought together on a guide roller 15 and bent by a die 16 transversely around the tube 14, after which the composite tube passes through a vulcanizing chamber 18 wherein the rubber layer becomes cured and bonded to the metal layers. Alternatively, the rubber layer may be a helicallywound strip, or extruded. The longitudinal edges of the metal strips are brought near to or in contact with each other. Prior to passing through the chamber 18 there may be applied over the outer metal layer a temporary wrapping of textile fabric or a temporary extruded lead sheath. Circumferential or helical ribs or corrugations may be provided on one or both of the metal layers.
