Abstract
1060464 Making piston rings; coiling; rolling TSENTRAL 'NOE KONSTRUKTORSKOTEKHNOLOGICHESKOE BUREAU 24 Oct 1963 41972/63 Index F2T 37E1R Piston rings are made by rolling melted cast iron into a band, cold rolling the band and cutting it into strips, and then winding the heated strips 13 to the form of helices which are subsequently cut to produce separate rings. A strip 13 is wound around a mandrel 4 of elliptical crosssection Fig.2, (not shown) and simultaneously shaped by four rollers (9), one only being shown. Each roller is carried by a ring 1 and is adjustably urged radially inwards by a spring 7. On a common head 6 with the roller 9 is a further roller 10 which urges the helical band axially along the mandrel and may be of conical form to shape the strip. After the formed helix is cut to provide separate rings each ring is formed with locks at its ends at 920-940‹C. and cooled in oil at 230-250‹C. The band is produced by rolling melted cast iron of composition 3À0-3À3% C. 1À40-1À75% Si, 0À4-0À7% Mu, less than 1À2% K and less than 0À1% S, to a thickness of 1À5 mm. and width of 1400 mm The band is coiled and heated to 950-980‹C. for 6 hours, and then cooled over 13 hours to 680‹C. to produce spheroidal or flake-like graphite. After cold rolling with a 20% reduction, and cutting the band into strips, the strips are formed into helices at 630-650‹C. with the apparatus shown.
