Abstract

618,946. Making piston rings. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. May 16, 1945, No. 12328. Convention date, May 19, 1944. [Class 83 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVI] A piston ring of cemented carbide having capillary grooves in the outer edge is made by extruding a strip of the composition, rolling the grooves into one face, sintering it and then reheating at a temperature of about 1350‹ C. and bending it to form an open ring. The reheating and bending may be carried out as described in Specification 588,305 or, alternatively, the strip may be heated by highfrequency induction heating or by a flame. The finished ring has an average density preferably not exceeding that of steel or cast iron and its weight may be controlled by making it hollow as shown in the cross-sections, Figs. 3 and 4, the strip in such a case being extruded around a mandrel. A series of parallel oil grooves 7 or 8 are formed either circumferentially or helically on the outer face, by means of a knurled roller before the sintering of the strip. If the helical grooves are approximately 1 inch long Î .01 inch Î .01 inch it is stated that no gas leak occurs. In a modified method, the extruded strip is wound to circular shape in a groove formed in a mandrel before sintering, a coating of paraffin being used on the inside of the groove to prevent breakage of the strip during shrinking.
