441,819. Variable - speed gearing. BAUMGARTNER, E., 6, Kloosweg, Bienne, Switzerland. July 12, 1935, Nos. 19993 and 19994. Convention dates, March 30 and May 3. [Class 80 (ii)] Constant-mesh countershaft gearing for cycles, is changed by momentarily back-pedalling, which action turns a central cam-shaft 15 relatively to the pedal-shaft 1, and thereby selectively retracts spring-pressed sliding pawls 10, which clutch wheels 4, 5, 6 unidirectionally to the pedal-shaft. The selector-shaft 15 is turned by an arm 20 which, on back-pedalling, strikes and is held by a fixed stop 18, this turning movement, which is limited by the sides of a recess 24 in the pedal-shaft, being communicated to the selector-shaft 15 by a spring-pressed pawl 21 engaging ratchet-teeth on the selector-shaft. The stop 18 is held by buffer-springs 18<4>, 18<5> and yields idly against a coil-spring 18<2> during forward pedalling. The sprocket-wheel 7 of the cycle is secured to the pinion 6, and the meshing pinions 9 are secured to a countershaft 8. Two- and three-speed gears are described.
