Abstract

Vat dyes are prepared by acylating amino derivatives of condensation products prepared by treating "glyoxaldianthraquinone compounds" obtainable according to Specification 369,765 with an acid condensing agent either of the aluminium halide group or of the sulphuric acid group according to Specification 410,552. Insofar as the initial materials in the foregoing processes do not contain amino groups, these may be introduced by nitration followed by reduction (to give mono- and di-amino derivatives) or by treating halogenated products with p-toluenesulphonamide followed by saponification. Acid chlorides, anhydrides or esters may be used for acylation. In examples: (a) the condensation product prepared by acting with a mixture of aluminium chloride, sodium chloride, and manganese dioxide on the condensation product of anthrone and glyoxal sulphate (cf. example 1 of Specification 369,765) is nitrated in nitrobenzene and reduced to give a monamino body which is acylated with benzoyl chloride (reddish-brown), o-chlorbenzoyl chloride (brown) p-methoxybenzoyl chloride (brown), acetic anhydride (brown), anthraquinone-2-carboxylic acid chloride (red-brown), 1-aminoanthraquinone-2-carboxylic acid chloride (red-brown), pyrazolanthrone-2-carboxylic acid chloride (yellow-brown); (b) the condensation product of example 1 of Specification 369,765 is nitrated in sulphuric acid, and reduced to give a diamino body which is condensed with benzoyl chloride (yellow-brown), anthraquinone - 2 - carboxylic acid chloride (brown); (c) the condensation product obtained by subjecting the product of 1-chloranthrone and glyoxal to alcoholic caustic potash and then to an aluminium chloride melt (cf. Specification 369,765) is treated with p-toluenesulphonamide and saponified (cf. example 5 of Specification 410,552); the diamino compound is treated with p-methoxybenzoyl chloride (yellow-brown); (d) the product of 2-chloranthrone and glyoxal is treated with a mixture of aluminium chloride, sodium chloride and manganese dioxide (cf. example 2 of Specification 369,765), nitrated and reduced to an amino body which is treated with benzoyl chloride (yellow-brown).
