[Classes 3 (i) and 3 (ii)] A sign of the kind comprising one or more panels bearing display matter, a chamber housing electric lamps arranged behind the panels and provided with diffusion surfaces, apertures for the passage of light formed along one or more of the edges of each panel, and strip reflectors over said apertures and forward of the display matter to direct light from the chamber on to the panel, is characterized in that the said lamps, apertures and reflectors are arranged so that any light reaching the reflectors without first striking a diffusion surface in the chamber is returned to the chamber and does not illuminate the display matter. As shown in Fig. 2, sign panels c mounted in a casing a, are illuminated by diffused light from a chamber r reflected on to the front of the panels by reflectors f. Celluloid colour screens c<1> are provided between the panels c and protective glass sheets b. The rear faces of the panels c and the inner faces of the end walls and roof of the casing are painted white or otherwise given a light diffusion surface as by reflectors fixed to the backs of the panels and by V-shaped reflectors i fixed to the end walls and roof. The inner face of the bottom of the casing may be similarly treated: Alternatively, the bottom of the casing may be left open for flood-lighting purposes. Ventilating tubes j, j<1>, j<2> are provided. In a modification, Fig. 7, an alternative form of casing is shown in which the face q is secured against a wall and a partition p is provided to form two diffusion chambers, the partition itself serving as a reflector.
