440,258. Casting composite sheets and bearings. ARNOLD, C., 11, Southampton Buildings, Chancery Lane, London.-(Cleveland Graphite Bronze Co.; 880, East 72nd Street, Cleveland, Ohio, U.S.A.) April 23, 1934, No. 12162. [Class 83 (i)] Casting-machines.-A coating of bearing metal is applied to a metal backing strip fed continuously through a molten metal bath, the coating metal being supplied directly from a melting furnace to the bath, and being applied to one surface only of the strip under a uniform static head throughout the area in contact with the metal. Steel strip 2 passes through a heating-chamber 1 and then through a chamber 4 containing molten metal 3, heated by burners 8. The thickness of the coating applied to the strip is determined at the outlet 7 by a gate 11 adjustable by screws 13, the coating being of uniform thickness or varying from one side of the strip to the other. The level of metal in the chamber 4 is maintained constant by overflow passages 10. Cooling water is projected on the strip beyond a baffle 20 bearing on the strip from a pipe 22. Shoulders 17 on guides 16 prevent the metal coating from reaching the sides of the strip, the guides 19 being continued beyond the outlet of the chamber 4. The strip is drawn through the apparatus by rolls 21. A modified form of the guides is described.
