Convention date, June 15, 1933. [Class 80 (iii)] [See also Group XXVII] Relates to driving gear for internal-combustion engines having three or more doubleacting cylinders disposed in star formation. As shown in Fig. 7, a number of cylinder stars are arranged parallel to one another and the pistons 6a in adjacent planes are connected by cross-head guides 11 and links 54 to opposite ends of a double-armed lever 102 mounted on the crank-shaft 51 and the pistons 4a, 5b in each star are linked to the lever 102 through members 42 .... 47 rotating about pivots 48. To enable the pistons of one star to lead those in the adjacent star the lever 102 is swung about the crank-shaft by links 53, 55 and different settings of the members 42 ... 47 enable the pistons 6a to lead the pistons 4<a>, 5a in the individual cylinder stars. Auxiliary pistons 50 are driven from the links 43 through levers 58 pivoted at 59. Modified forms of driving gear are described in which (1) the pistons in each vertical plane act on a separate crank on a common crank-shaft and one of the cranks is in advance of the other; (2) the piston 6a in each vertical plane is connected to a crank and the pistons 4a, 5a to a second crank which is displaced by an angle of 180‹ plus a small angle of lead and the corresponding cranks of one cylinder star lead those of the adjacent cylinder star; and (3) the pistons in adjacent vertical planes act on three cranks of a crank-shaft which are relatively displaced, one crank being connected to the pistons 4<a>, 54 in one plane, the second to the piston 6a in this plane and the pistons 4a, 5a in the second plane and the third to the piston 6a in the second plane. In the modified form shown in Fig. 12, two cylinder stars are disposed in the same plane and the pistons 4a, 5a, 4b, 5b are connected to a crank 83 through linkage 84 .... 90 whilst the piston 6 is connected through linkage 92 .. 95 to a crank 91 displaced relative to the crank 83 by 180‹ plus an angle of lead. The driving gear may be situated in one plane by mounting the crank 91 on a separate crank-shaft which is geared to the shaft 82.
