[Class 38 (ii)] In a polyphase rectifier or inverter system comprising a group of grid-controlled valves 14 ... 19 and transformer 12, 13 interconnecting an A.C. network 10 and a D.C. network 11, and a source of commutating potential (which in the case of a rectifier may be the winding 13 and in the case of an inverter may be an arrangement of commutating condensers) tending to transfer current rapidly from one valve to another, there is provided in series with each of the valves an inductive winding 20 ... 25 in order to retard the rate of transfer during commutation. In order to reduce the voltage due to the windings 20 ... 25 tending to maintain current flow in the valve from which current is being diverted, means are provided for short-circuiting the voltage induced in the winding during the period when current therein is diminishing. Such means comprise auxiliary valves 33, 34, 35 connected across secondary windings 30, 31, 32 associated with each pair of the windings 20 ... 25. In order further to reduce the rate at which transients due to commutation are built up, condensers 39 ... 43 are connected as shown.
