Abstract

Plastic materials are obtained by reacting a solution of an alkaline polysulphide with an ether comprising two halogenated alkyl radicals wherein the halogen atomas are attached to the terminal carbon atoms. Suitable ethers include b -chloroethoxyethyl - b - chloroethyl ether but sym-di(b -chlorethyl)-ether is excluded. Suitable polysulphides include those of potassium, ammonium, sodium, barium, strontium, lithium and triethanolamine. The reaction may take place in the presence of alcohol and of a dispersing agent such as freshly precipitated magnesium hydroxide. Suitable polysulphide solutions may be obtained by dissolving sodium hydroxide or sulphide in water and adding sulphur. In an example a polysulphide solution is treated with b -chloroethoxyethyl b -chlorethyl ether to yield plastic materials. The product may be used in the manufacture of gaskets, impregnated or coated fabric (such as cloth or asbestos) and in the electrical industry.
