Abstract

Plastic materials are prepared by reacting a solution of an alkaline polysulphide with furfuraldehyde or an alkyl substitution derivative thereof in the presence or absence of alcohol. A small amount of dispersing agent such as magnesium hydroxide may also be present. Suitable polysulphides include sodium, calcium, potassium, ammonium, barium, strontium, lithium or triethanolamine polysulphides and suitable solutions containing them may be made by dissolving powdered sulphur in aqueous sodium hydroxide or sulphide. In an example a solution of a polysulphide is heated with furfuraldehyde in the presence or absence of a dispersing agent such as magnesium hydroxide to yield a plastic product or a product resembling latex. The products may be used in the manufacture of gaskets, impregnated or coated fabrics such as cloth or asbestos and in the electrical industry.
