Abstract
In the production of coke by the low temperature distillation of a freely-flowing mixture of powdered carbonaceous material and oil in an externally heated, rotating, inclined cylindrical retort, a proportion of a soium salt, such as caustic soda or sodium carbonate, preferably in the form of an aqueous solution, is added to the mixture prior to its introduction into the retort. The caustic soda solution may comprise the liquor which has been used for washing the volatile products produced in the process and preferably comprises a 10 per cent NaOH solution. 1 to 2 per cent of the aqueous solution is added to the carbonaceous material--oil mixture, the aqueous solution containing, if desired, a proportion of soda ash such as 1 to 10 per cent on the weight of the aqueous liquor. In an example, equivalent weights of powdered coal and oil with 1 \ba1/4\be per cent of the aqueous liquor are intimately mixed prior to distillation. A distillation temperature of 500--600 DEG C. is specified. Specifications 393,601, 393,602; and 443,593, [Group XII], are referred to.
