Abstract
Products useful as fertilizers and comprising double salts of the type CaKPO4 are obtained by calcining mineral phosphates with trialkaliorthophosphates at moderate temperatures which may be below 1100 DEG C. For each part of P2O5 in the mineral phosphate a quantity of trialkali-phosphate containing more than 0,5, preferably about 0,8 parts of P2O5 must be employed. In place of trialkali phosphate, mixtures of alkali metaphosphate or pyrophosphate or mono- or di-alkali phosphate with alkali carbonate or alkali silicate may be used. Salts such as potassium chloride or magnesium chloride which assist the reaction may be added to the initial mixture and enable the reaction temperature to be lowered to 900 or 800 DEG C. By subjecting the mineral phosphate to a pretreatment with P2O5, for instance by using the waste gases from a phosphorus furnace, less trialkali phosphate may be used; the said pretreatment may increase the P2O5 content of the mineral by as much as 20 per cent. Reaction may be effected in a rotary or shaft furnace or in a Dwight-Lloyd blast apparatus, and the initial mixture may be moulded if desired.
