Abstract
Alkali-celluloses of low water-content are prepared from watery alkali-celluloses by drying at temperatures below 18 DEG C., preferably below 10 DEG C. It is preferred to carry out the drying in vacuum apparatus provided with cooling means, the material being spread in thin layers or continuously stirred or kneaded; but the drying may also be carried out in the presence of air, for example, in hydrogen or nitrogen. To hasten drying, a dessicating agent may be employed. The initial material may be cellulose or a conversion product in which the cellulose has not been degraded too far. The material may be soaked in a solution containing the correct amount of caustic alkali but an excess of water, and the whole mass subsequently dried; or an excess of alkali solution may be employed, and the mass pressed, centrifuged, &c. before drying, until it contains the correct amount of alkali; or the material may be impregnated with alkali solution, pressed if necessary, and solid caustic alkali added. The alkali-celluloses obtained are particularly adapted for the manufacture of cellulose ethers, either by a single stage or multi-stage process, the procedure depending on the character of the desired product and on the amount of caustic alkali incorporated with the cellulose.
