[Class 40 (iv)] [See also Group XXXVIII] An open air or like public address system for distributing sound over a large area comprises a number of loudspeakers or groups thereof fed from a common source and distributed over the area, the loudspeakers having mushroom-like insertions in the sound channels and being arranged so that sound is propagated radially and downwardly. The area may be split up into imaginary squares or rectangles with a loudspeaker at the corner of each square. Echo effects are substantially avoided. The amplifier may emphasize the higher frequencies. Each loud-speaker 7 may be pivoted to a bracket 8 on a post 6 and be provided with sound directing surfaces 9, 10 spaced by posts 11 the resultant sound channel having a exponential characteristic. The surface 9 is a continuation of the diaphragm. Alternately exponential horn loudspeakers, with reflectors in the horns, may be used.
