Convention date, May 3, 1934. [Class 108 (iii)] [See also Group XL] Bimetallic or other members are provided for relieving the stress in a spring which tensions the cathode filament structure of a thermionic valve, and is under abnormal heating conditions during manufacture of the valve. As shown in Fig. 2, the bimetallic members consist of (a) a spreader 31 resting on an insulator 30 on a tungsten spring 29 and carrying hooks 32 supporting the bights 24 of the filament and (b) two dished members 27 connected together by links 34 and supported on a collar 26 on a standard 17. The members 31, 27 consist of an outer layer of the alloy known by the Registered Trade Mark " Invar," and an inner layer of nickel or nickel alloy. When the spring is heated abnormally the parts 31, 27 flatten out and allow the spring to expand. In a modification, Fig. 4, the upper compensating element consists of a flanged disc 37 with a depressed central portion 38 sliding on the standard 17. A metal cylinder 39, carried by the disc 37, acts as a heat shield for the spring 29.
