Abstract
Non-hardening products are prepared by condensing urea, formaldehyde and hexamethylenetetramine with or without the addition of an acid catalyst in the proportion of 1 molecule of hexamethylenetetramine to 1 to 10 molecules of urea and 1 to 2 molecules of formaldehyde to each molecule of urea. Other substances capable of reacting with formaldehyde such as thiourea, phenol, acetamide, oxamide or aniline may be mixed with the urea and the hexamethylenetetramine may be added as a whole or in parts. Starch, gum arabic, animal glue tragacanth or glycerin may be added to modify the properties of the condensation mixture. The products which may be dried may be used for gumming paper or pasteboard, for stiffening and dressing fabrics, as protective colloids, for glueing wood and as cements in the manufacture of safety glass. In examples, hexamethylenetetramine is condensed with urea, formaldehyde with or without the addition of oxalic acid and with or without the addition of phenol, urethane, thiourea, gum arabic, starch flour or animal glue. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 429,346.
