[Class 80 (i)] A device of the pivoting jaw type for attaching a pronged fastener C located between the jaws 5 in a comb plate 2 has its jaws not connected together but controlled by separate springs 6a and supported on inclined planes, whereby on the application of a squeezing or pressing force they first slide up such planes ; and when the legs of the fastener have been brought into contact with the edge of the belt, the jaws pivot about a line parallel with and adjacent to the line of contact of the fastener with the belt D to perform the clinching operation. In the form shown in Fig. 2, the jaws 5 are pressed against the base 1 by spring-loaded bolts 6. As the vice jaws A are brought together the edges a of the jaws 5 ride up the slotted comb plate 2. Further movement of the jaws A causes the jaws 5 to pivot about their edges a and clinch the prongs c. In the self-contained form shown in Fig. 6, the jaws 5 are squeezed together by cams 41 on levers 14 connected by links 13 to a crank plate 11 rotated from a handle 42 through pinion 44 and quadrant 8. To accommodate belts of different thicknesses, the pivots 15 of the levers 14 are mounted on eccentrics interconnected by linkwork 17, 18, 19 so as to be simultaneously rotatable from a handle 16, which is retained in position by a pawl 21. To square the end D of the belt a knife 27 is provided which is traversed by a handle 29 carrying a pinion 31 engaging a rack on the rod 26 carrying the knife. During cutting, the belt end is clamped by a handle 37 pivoted to the frame at 39 and carrying a grip pad 36.
