1332164 Attaching fasteners TEXTRON Inc 18 Nov 1970 [30 April 1970] 54825/70 Heading A3H [Also in Division B4] A ram mechanism for attaching snap fastener elements 18, 20 to one another with textile material clamped therebetween comprises an elongate ram plunger 250 movable along its longitudinal axis, gripping means e.g. jaws 270, 280 on the end of the plunger biassed by spring 254 to grip one (20) of the elements, a lost-motion connection provided by slot 256 and bolt 290 between the plunger and the gripping means, a cam surface 268 on the plunger and in engagement with the gripping means, and an anvil 156 for supporting the other element 18. In operation, material is placed between the elements, plunger 250 is actuated and the elements brought together until, in the last part of the stroke of the plunger when the elements are attached to one another, the lost-motion connection permits the plunger to move relatively to the gripping means and towards the anvil whereupon the cam surface 268 causes the gripping means to release the element 20. In the embodiment shown, the ram plunger is operated by a pneumatic cylinder 34 acting through toggle link 52 which is fixed at 60. Cylinder body 34 may move relatively to its pivotal trunnion 38 and through links 72-82 and bar 104 operates feed arms 90, 108 having prongs 98, 118 which feed strips of interconnected elements 18, 20 to the plunger and anvil. The movement of the plunger and the pivotal spring-loaded movement of anvil arm 158 on which the anvil 156 is mounted cause knife blades 132, 175 to sever the end elements from the strips. The blades may be operated manually. The sequence and cycle of cylinder action is controlled by switch mechanism 200-234 actuated by the movement of anvil arm 158 and externally.
