Abstract

714, 959. Belt-fastening appliances. MATTHAEI, C. April 10, 1952 [May 4, 1951], No. 9228/52. Class 80(1) In a combined belt-cutting and wire-hookpressing device for a conveyer or other belt fastening, pivoted jaws which clinch one hook at a time are automatically advanced across the belt after each jaw closure and may be used either with hooks held spaced on a paper strip or with a hook strip comprising side-by-side hooks which are directly connected togethere.g. by lacquer or solder. The pressing jaws are actuated by two hand levers 5, 6, Fig. 8, while the belt 11 is held between upper and lower clamping bars 17 secured to fixed supports 18, 19, the upper bar 17 having a rack 16 which is engaged by a pawl 15 operated by the lever 5 to feed the pressing device across the belt by one hook space each time the jaws are opened. Preferably two racks 16 are provided so that the pressing device, which is slidable on the bar 17, can function on either side thereof. The bar 17 has various slots, Fig. 14 (not shown), to receive the end of an adjusting bar for locating the belt at right angles to the bar 17. A removable rod 24 supports the hooks and shapes the apices, a hook strip being held in a magazine 12 and pressed by a spring- loaded slide 13 against the pressing jaws. Each jaw 4, Fig. 3, is pivotally mounted by segments 3 on an axis tangential to the hooks and has a central pressing surface 7 which is flanked on one side by a recessed part to clear the hooks already pressed in. and on the other side by an inclined groove 9 whose edge separates the leading hook of the strip, this hook being then positioned and partially pressed into the belt by the groove 9. The cutting device, Fig. 10, is slidable along the bar 17 and comprises a knife 51 actuated by a lever 52. In a modification the magazine 12 is dispensed with and the hooks are held spaced in a paper strip, the pawl-and-rack feed of a pair of plain jaws corresponding to the hook spacing on the paper. Various modifications are suggested. The hooks may be loose in a magazine or held on a paper strip in a magazine; each jaw closure may press two or more hooks simultaneously ; a retaining comb may be employed ; the belt may be cut before being clamped and an abutment be provided to position the belt in the clamp ; the cutting and pressing devices may be combined to operate together; previously pressed-in hooks may be used as a feeding rack.
