The objects ot the invention are to secure an'end clampingdevice` the clamps of which arecapable ot'beinu elevated or moved up out ot the way to permit ready access to the main clamps t'or insertingl the work; to mount the .end-clamps, tor this purpose, upon means supported at the rear `oi the niaiu clamps or at their ends away 'from the operator so as to swingup anddown; to utilize vfor this purpose the hold-down rods of the main clamps, 0r `rods adapted to carry means lior pressing' downen the work being clamped; to enable the end-clamps at the` same time kto be adjustable and also renu fable; to enable squaring means to be applied and cooperate with the end-clamping means, and to obtain other advantages and results as may be brought out by the tollowing description.

The end-clamps of my invention extend transversely ot the vmain clamps 1, 2 and 3, above the same, and have their bars 21 mounted upon the hold-down rods 17, one end of' each bar carrying an adjustable downwardly projecting aw 22 which can be slid quickly into any desired position, and
at its other end ,a jaw 23 which is adapted to be moved toward the Work by` a screw 24. According to my invention the bars21 of the e11d-01a1nps .extend `beneath `the hold-down rods 17 of the main clamps and are supported thereon so that whenever said hold-down rods are released from their catches 29 and thrown upward by their springs 19 to afford access to the main clamps for putting the worlr therein, the said end-clamps are also carried upward out of the way with said hold-down rods. Preferably the bars 21 of the end-clamps are supported by the holddown rods 17 so as to permit adjust-ment of the end-clamps longitudinally of the holddown rods and also enable the hold-down rods to slide with their main clamps longitudinally of the end-clamps, which I have shown accomplished by slides on the helddown rods each comprising a block 25 havng an upper transverse aperture 26 to re- :eive a hold-down rod 17 and a lower transverse aperture 27 at right angles to the upper one (see Figure 5) to slidably receive an end-clamp bar 21., the block having at its upper part a set screw 28 to clamp it in position upon the hold-down rod. By this arrangement the main clamps are all adjustable with respect to one another to enable them to be moved nearer together or further apart to accommodate different pieces of work, and the end-clamps are similarly adjustable with respect to each other. Furthermore, upon releasing the hooks 2O t-he rods 17 are all swung upward, as shown in Figure 3, and carry with them the end clamps out of the way of the operator in taking out or putting in work. Obviously the end clamps may be mounted upon any suitable means supported at the rear ends of the main clamps so as to swing up and down, other than the hold-down rods shown, and may be made slidable in any suitable way other than by the .slides shown, the particular construction shown being only an illustrative one of many that could be employed.
ln applying the sqnaring means which have shown in the drawings, an outside one of the main clamps, as l, is provided upon the outside edges of its table or work-receiving surface with a longitudinally extending bar 29 riveted or otherwise suitably secured to the clamp with its inside edge formingl a shoulder to engage the work being clamped the jaw 23 of the end-clamps bearing against the opposite edge of the bar. Another bar il() similar to the bar 29 is arranged edgewise against the jaws 5 of the heads t of the main clamps and secured in right angular relation to the bar 29 by being riveted to a corner bracing plate 31 which is also riveted to the outer end of the bar 29 en the clamp 1. For the same reason the adjustable jaws 6 of the main clamps have each an angle 35 riveted by one flange to the face of the jaw so that its other flange lies slidably upon the work table or surface of the clamp and receives the marginal portion of the worlf'; and supports it at the same height as the opposite spacing strip projection 34: and corner plate 31.

lVhile it is very useful in many cases to employ the squaring means with improved end clamps, obviously it is not necessary to do so and the end clamps can be used without any squaring means, in which case the guide 37 and angles 35 and 36 on the jaws are dispensed with. lWhen it is desired to remove the end clamps from the main clamps, as for work in which they are not .neededl` their supporting rods may be removed with them or said supporting rods may remain ou the main clamps to receive the usual pressure shoes (not shown) and serve in the ordinary capacity of hold-down rods. litany other variations may be made in the use of my improvements, and many moditications in the structure of parts and of the clamps to which they are applied, without departing); from the spirit and scope of the invention, and therefore I do not desire to be understood as limiting myself except as required by the following claims when construed in the light of the prior art.
Having thus described the invention, what l claim is:

The combination with a plurality of main clamps having jaws for the side edges of a piece of worlr. of a bar secured longitudinally upon the work-receiving surface of one of said clamps to engage an end edge of the piece of work, and another bar secured to the said longitudinal bar in right angular relation thereto and lying contiguous to the faces of o-ne set of jaws of the clamps to engage a side edge of the piece of worlr.
20. rlhe combination with a plurality of main clamps having jaws for the side edges of a piece of work, of a bar secured longitudinally upon the work-receiving surface of one of said clamps to engage an end edge of the piece of work, and another bar secured to the same longitudinal bar in rightangular relation thereto and lying contiguous to the faces of one set of jaws of the clamps in slidable relation to other than the one having the said longitudinal bar.

The combination of a plurality of main clamps, two bars in rigid permanent right angular relation to each other, one of said bars lying` against. the faces of the stationary aws of said main clamps and adapted to be clamped between the side edge of a piece of work and said stationary jaws and the other bar lying parallel to said main clamps, and end clamps adapted to clamp one end of the piece of work against the last-mentioned bar.
22. The combination with a plurality of main clamps having jaws for the side edges of a piece of work, of a bar secured longitudinally upon the work-receiving surface of one of said clamps to engage an end edge of the piece of work, another bar secured to the said longitudinal bar in right angular relation thereto and lying contiguous to the faces of one set of jaws of the clamps, and means for holding said transverse bar slid ably in place with respect to said jaws.
The combination with a plurality of main clamps having jaws for the side edges of a piece of work, of a bar in parallel relation to said clamps to engage the end edge of the piece of work, a bar extending transversely of the work-receiving surfaces of the clamps contiguous to the faces of one set of their jaws and secured to the said longitudinal bar in right angular relation thereto, and means upon one of the jaws contiguous to the transverse bar for holding said bar slidably in place with respect to the work-receivingl surfaces of the clamps.
2li. The combination set forth in claim 17 in which said means is an angle upon the face of one of the jaws.
25. The combination with a plurality of main clamps having jaws for the side edges of a piece of work, of a bar in parallel rela tion to said clamps to engage the end edge of the piece of work, a bar extending transversely of the work-receiving surfaces of the clamps contiguous to the faces of one set of their jaws and secured to the said longitudinal bar in right angular relation thereto, and means upon a clamp for holding said transverse bar slidably in place with respect to its contiguous jaws.
26. The combination set forth in claim 25 in which said means is a stop projecting from the vifork-ieceiifing surface of a clamp.
27. The combination with a plurality of main clamps having jaws for the side edges of a piece of work, of a bar secured longitudinally upon the work-receiving surface of one of said clamps to engage the end edge of the piece of work, a bar extending transversely of the work-receiving surfaces of the clamps contiguous to the faces of one set of their jaws, a. member beneath the adjacent ends of said bars across the angle between them and holding them in right angular relation, spacing strips beneath said bars at a distance from said member, and spacing means upon jaws of the main clamps opposite the spacing strip for the transverse bar.
28. The combination set forth in claim 27 in which the last-mentioned spacing means consists of an angle upon the face of each jaw.
