6 Claims.
This invention relates to a padding press for printers, and has for its principal object the provision of a simple, inexpensive, and highly efiicient mechanism which can be tilted to receive a pile of pads so that they will align by gravity against a backboard to provide a perfect padding surface and to provide a highly eflicient and quickacting clamping means for clamping the aligned pads in position for gluing.
A further object is to so construct the device that after the pads have been glued, they may be removed in their clamped position from the base so as to allow the latter to be used for a second pile of pads without it being necessary to wait for the first pile to set.
Other objects and advantages reside in the detail construction of the invention, which is designed for simplicity, economy, and efliciency. These will become more apparent from the following description.
In the following detailed description of the invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawing which forms a part hereof. Like numerals refer to like parts in all views of the drawing and throughout the description.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side view of the improved printer's padding press in the pad-receiving position;
Fig. 2 is a similar view, illustrating the padding press in position to receive the padding glue;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of position, with the board therein;
Fig. 4 is a rear view of the press with the back board removed;

The improved padding press comprises two longitudinally extending frame members, which will be herein designated as runners l0, maintained in parallel relation by means of a rear cross piece I l and two intermediate cross bars [2 and I3. Each runner I0 is provided with a downwardly extendthe press in the upright ing foot block I4. In use, the runners are placed 13';
upon a table or work bench, with the foot blocks [4 hooked over'the front edge thereof to prevent the runners from being pushed across the bench or table.
.. The padding is done on a platform l5 extending between two side cleats [6. The side cleats I 6 are joined across the back by means of a front cleat IT. A ratchet post l9 arises from each of the side cleats I6 and are maintained in vertical, spaced relation by means of a cross rod 2 I. Each ratchet post I9 consists of two similar members held in separated parallel relation by means of spacing blocks 20 to form a vertical open space therebetween. The ratchet posts are provided with ratchet teeth 22 on their forward edges. Each tooth is formed with a horizontal top and a rela tively long inclined side. A pressure bar 23 extends across both posts l9.
The pressure bar 23 is provided with two projecting end portions 24, each having a beveled rearward edge '25, the bevel of which corresponds to the incline of the sides of the teeth 22. The end portions 24 are drawn against the inclined sides of the teeth 22 by means of tension bolts 26 provided with crank members 2'! secured thereon. The bolts 26 pass through the vertical openings between the two members of the ratchet posts and are threaded into tapped openings in a cross bar 28 which extends between and bears against the rear faces of the posts.
A spring 36 surrounds each of the bolts 26 within a spring socket formed in the end portions 24. The springs 36 are compressed between the bottoms of their sockets and the thumb nuts 21.
A front board 29 is supported forwardly of the ratchet posts l9 by means of hooked latch members 30 which are rotatably mounted on the cross bar 2|. The front board 29 is provided with two vertical stiffening strips 3| which project below the front board 29 at their lower extremities into formed in the front cleat l7.
Operation The front board 29 is placed in position in the sockets 32, with the latch members 36 engaging The bolts 25 are loosened sufficiently to allow the pressure bar 23 to pass over the teeth 22 and the bar 23 is lifted to the tops of the ratchet posts, the springs 36 being compressed as the bar passes over each tooth on its way upward. The springs cause the end portions 24 to engage the teeth whenever the bar is released to prevent the latter from falling. The platform is then tilted forwardly until the stiffening strips 3| rest against the forward cross bar I 3,
" as shown in Fig. 1.
The pads of paper, indicated at 33, are now piled upon the platform against the front board 29. A wooden block 3-4 is placed upon the pile of pads 33 and the pressure bar 23 is pressed down against the block 34. The bolts 26 are now tightened to force the beveled edges 25 of the bar extremities 24 against the inclined sides of the teeth 22, causing the beveled edges to slide along the inclined teeth, creating a downward pressure on the block 34 and upon the front or top portion of the pile of pads 33 to securely clamp them to the platform IS.
The tilting portion of the device is now swung to the vertical position of Fig. 2, and the front board 29 is removed by swinging the latch members 3t upwardly and lifting the stiffening strips 31 from their sockets 32. This exposes the fronts or tops of the pads so that the padding glue may be easily brushed thereon, as indicated at 35. The tilting portion of the device with its clamped pads is now lifted, by means of the cross rod 2!, from the runners ill and set aside to dry. A new platform is then placed in position and the process is repeated.
While a specific form of the improvement has been described and illustrated herein, it is desired to be understood that the same may be varied, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed and desired secured by Letters Patent 1. In a printers padding press of the type having a supporting base and a tiltable racl: mounted on said base, means for applying compression to a pile of pads in said tiltable rack, comprising: a platform; a ratchet post arising from each of said platform adjacent the forward edge thereof; a spacing member connecting the upper extremities of said posts and maintaining them in upright, parallel relation; plurality of ratchet teeth formed along the forward edge of each ratchet post, each of said teeth comprising a horizontal top portion and a rearwardl and downwardly inclined front edge portion; a pressure bar extending across the teeth of both posts and means for drawing said pressure bar against each post so that it will engage the inclined edge portions of said teeth to urge said pressure bar downwardly toward said platform.
2. In a printers padding press of the type having a supporting base and a tiltable rack mounted on said base, means for applying compression to a pile of pads in said tiltable rack, comprising: a platform; a ratchet post arising from each side of said platform adjacent the forward edge thereof; a spacing member connecting the upper extremities of said posts and maintaining them in upright, parallel relation; a plurality of ratchet teeth formed along the forward edge of each ratchet post, each of said teeth comprising a horizontal top portion, and rearwardly and downwardly inclined front edge portion; a pressure bar extending across the teeth of both posts; inclined surfaces formed on the extremities of said pressure bar, corresponding to the inclined edge portions of said teeth; and means for drawing said inclined surfaces against said inclined edge portions to impart a downward motion to said pressure bar.

In a printers'padding-press of the type having a supporting base and a tiltable rack mounted on said base, means for a pile of pads in said tiltable rack, comprising: a platform; a ratchet post arising from each side of said platform adjacent the forward edge thereof; a spacing member connecting the upper. extremities of said'posts and maintaining them. in upright parallelrelation; a plurality of ratchet teeth formed along the forward edge of each ratchet post, each of said teeth comprising a horizontal top portion and a rearwardlly and downwardly inclined front edge portion; a pressure bar extending across the teeth of both posts; inclined surfaces formed on the extremities of said pressure bar, corresponding to the inclined edge portions of said teeth; a tension bolt extending through a vertically elongated slot in each ratchet post and through said pressure bar; and hand-rotated nuts on said bolts for forcing said pressure bar toward said posts so that the two inclined surfaces will coact to force said pressure bar toward said platform.

In a printers padding press of the type having a supporting base and a tiltable rack mounted on said base, means for applying compression to a pile of pads in said tiltable rack, comprising: a platform; a ratchet post arising from each side of said platform adjacent the forward edge thereof a spacing member connecting the upper extremities of said posts and maintaining them in uprighuparallel relation; a plurality of ratchet teeth formed along the forward edge of each ratchet post, each of said teeth comprising a horizontal top portion and a rearwardly and downwardly inclined front'edge portion; a pressure bar extending across the teeth of both posts; inclined surfaces formed on the extremities of said pressure bar, corresponding to the inclined edge portions of said teeth; a tension bolt extending through a vertically elongated slot in each ratchet post and through said pressure bar; and handrotated nuts on said bolts for forcing said pressure bar toward said posts so that the two inclined surfaces will coact to force said pressure bar toward said platform; and springs positioned between said nuts and said pressure bar to resiliently maintain said bar against said teeth.

In a printers padding press of the type having a supporting base and a tiltable rack mounted on said base, means for applying compression to a pile of pads in said tiltable rack, comprising: a platform; a ratchet post arising from each side of said platform adjacent the forward edge thereof; a spacing member connecting the upper extremities of said posts and maintaining them in upright parallel relation; a plurality of ratchet 1: teeth formed along the forward edge of each ratchet post, each of said teeth comprising a horizontal top portion and a rearwardly and downwardly inclined front edge portion; a pressure bar extending across the teeth of both posts;
, means for drawing said pressure bar against each applying compression to post so that it will engage the inclined edge portions of said teeth to urge said pressure bar downwardly toward said platform; a backboard; projecting portions on said backboard engaging receiving sockets in said platform; and rotatable hooks mounted on said spacing member and arranged to engage the upper extremity of said backboard to maintain it at right angles to said platform.
