Claims.
Our invention relates to an improved padding or tableting press used for holding under pressure a plurality of pads or of sheets while the backs are being glued together. It is an especial object of our invention to provide a device of this kind which is simpler in construction and less expensive to manufacture than prior devices for the same purpose.
It is also an object of our invention to provide novel means for applying pressure on pads, regardless of whether there are few or many pads. It is also an object to provide a stand in which'a removable aligmnent rack may be seated and which permits of the substitution of a wider back in place of a narrower one by simply lifting out one alignment rack and substituting the other on the stand or support, or vice-versa. It is also an object of our invention to provide a novel detachable holding and pressure unit which may be removed from the alignment rack after the pads have been mounted on this unit and pressure has been applied to hold them in position for gluing.
We attain these and other objectives of our invention by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:

Like numerals designate like parts in each of the several views.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, we provide a holding base I which has rearwardly slanting back portions 2 for supporting the reinforcing strip 3 of an alignment rack 4. Strip 3 is a reinforcing and guide strip to give'strength to the alignment rack. We'also provide the upwardly slanting support Band base 6 upon which the bottom of the pad holding and pressure unit rests. The alignment rack A has edge strips or flanges I on opposite side edges. Their lower ends 8 project down beyond the support 5 to hold the alignment rack firmly in position. There is also a space 9 between the lower edge of the base 6 and in front of the back portions 2 to permit the lower end of the alignment rack A to extend below and rest against the lower edge of base 6, and by which it is held in proper position.
The pad-holding and pressure unit comprises a base plate In having corner notches II, cut in it to allow its central portion [2 to project inwardly between the edge strips 1. Base plate [0 also has downwardly projecting end strips I3 which function as feet when the unit is removed from the base I To the opposite ends of the base plate [0 of the pad holding unit are attached eye-bolts M to the eyes of which are connected the elongated strips l5 provided with longitudinally spaced openings 15. We provide a top pressure plate It having corner notches l1 similar to the notches H, to permit the pressure unit to seat snugly against the alignment rack 4. Top pressure plate l6 has apertures similarly positioned near each end, through which threaded draw-bars l9 are inserted. Above the top pressure plate [6 are washers 20 and thumb nuts 2| for securing the draw-bars IS in adjusted pressure-exerting position. At the lower end of the draw-bars are out-turned lugs 22 engageable in any of the openings l5 of the strips 15, whereby pressure on the pads placed on the pressure unit at plate [2 may readily be obtained or adjusted.
The slanting back portions 2 of the holding base I seat in the slots 8' of the re-inforcing strips 3 of the alignment rack shown in Fig. 4 and of the re-inforcing strip 3 of the wider alignment rack shown in Fig. 9.
In using the invention, a pile of pads 23 are placed with the backs aligned against the alignment rack and they are then secured in this position by adjusting the thumb-nuts 2! to secure the desired pressure on the top plate "3 which rests on the uppermost pad. The entire pressure unit may then be lifted from the holding base to permit the operator to apply padding cement to the backs of the pads. When the pads are dry, pressure is released and the pads .are removed from the pressure unit.
For using in cementing pads of greater width, We provide a similar but wider pressure unit having a wider base plate It) and a correspondingly wider top plate IE but which is otherwise similar to the smaller-sized pressure unit.
What we claim is:
1. In a paper padding or tableting press, the combination of a slanting holding base having rearwardly slanting members for supporting an alignment rack, an alignment rack removably seated on said base and having a transversely extending re-inforcing strip at its lower end, the alignment rack having side strips projecting downwardly to engage opposite side portions of the holding base, a base plate removably seated on the holding base, downwardly projecting end strips on the base plate to function as feet, eyebolts mounted in the base plate, strips having their lower ends engaged by said eye-bolts, and having a series of openings a top pressure plate, threaded draw-bars adjustably secured to the top pressure plate, out-turned lugs on the lower ends of said draw-bars to engage any of the openings of the strips, thumb-nuts for adjusting the tension on the draw-bars whereby to apply the desired pressure on a series of tablets or pads on which the top pressure plate rests, the base plate, slotted strips, threaded draw-bars, thumb-nuts and top pressure plate with the pads or tablets to which pressure has been applied being removable as a unit from the holding base, whereby units of different widths may be used on the same holding base.
2. A paper padding or tableting press comprising a base plate, an alignment rack, a base member having a downwardly and rearwardly sloping top portion for supporting said base plate and an upwardly and rearwardly sloping back portion for supporting said alignment rack, a top pressure plate, and adjustable pressure means interposed between each of the opposite end portions of said pressure plate and the corresponding side edge portion of said base plate.
3. A paper padding or tableting press comprising a base plate, an alignment rack, a base member having a downwardly and rearwardly sloping top portion for supporting said base plate and an upwardly and rearwardly sloping back portion for supporting said alignment rack, a top pressure plate, elongated strips provided with longitudinally spaced openings secured at one end to each of the opposite side edge portions of said base plate, and elongated members adjustably secured at one end to each of the opposite end portions of said pressure plate, each of said elongated members having a lug at the other end adapted to engage in one of said spaced openings in an adjacent strip.
4. A paper padding or tableting press comprising a base plate, an alignment rack, a base member having a top portion for supporting said base plate and a back portion for supporting said alignment rack, a pressure plate, adjustable pressure means between said pressure plate and said base plate, said alignment rack having forwardly extending flanges on opposite side edges and spaced slots in the. lower rear portion thereof, said back portion having spaced elements engaging in said slots, and said base plate and said pressure plate having notches in each of the back corners thereof for engagement with said flanges.
5. A paper padding or tableting press comprising a base plate, an alignment rack, a base member having a top portion for supporting said base plate and a back portion for supporting said alignment rack, a pressure plate having apertures therethrough adjacent opposite ends thereof, a-pair of elongated strips each having longitudinally spaced openings and each secured at one end to opposite edge portions of said base plate, a pair of elongated members each having a threaded end portion extending through one of said apertures and each having an opposite end portion provided with a lug engaging one of said openings in one of said strips, and a pair of rotatable threaded members engaging said threaded end portions.
