Abstract

544,278. Strapping timber &c. FIELDER, M. Sept. 12, 1940, No. 14126. [Class 45] In a method of, and apparatus for, applying clamping bands around wooden objects one end of the band 1 is carried round the object 7 and laid over the other end which is provided with upstanding side lugs 3 apertured to receive a cross-key 6 for retaining the overlapping parts in contact. The band is tensioned by a tool comprising a U-shaped frame 10 housing a slide 11 mounted on a screw 12 movable longitudinally by a nut 13 rotatable by pivot 15 on a handle whereby the band, when gripped between the slide 11 and a coacting serrated member 16 having an inclined slot engaging a pin 20 mounted in lugs 21 on the frame 10, is tensioned. Extensions 10a of the frame 10 carry pivot pins 22a supporting recessed members 22 adapted to engage the key 6 during tensioning of the band, and when a suitable tension is applied the tool is turned bodily on the pivot pins 22a to bend the band over the key and press it down. The tool is provided with a handle 27 for swinging it over and a central handle 28 for carrying it. The pin 20 has an eccentric part engaging the slot in the member 16 to permit rapid release of the grip on rotating the pin by a handle 25; this handle has a stop pin 26 to engage the frame 10, and the pin may be withdrawn bodily by the handle to facilitate insertion of the band. When the tool is in tensioning position the axis of the pivot pins 22a lies in the central plane of the key and at a distance from the side of the key of one and half times the thickness of the band, whereby the bending over of the band is facilitated. In a modification, the apertured lugs and the key at one end of the band are replaced by a U-shaped clip whose lower limb is housed in a fold in the end of the band and which receives the return end of the band overlying the folded end. The clip provides an abutment for the pivoted members on the tensioning tool which after tensioning is turned over to bend back the tensioned end of the band over the upper limbs of the clip.
