Abstract

<PICT:0438680/III/1> A method of making emulsions consists in circulating a stream of previously made emulsion, subdividing it, adding material to be emulsified to one portion and water and emulsifying agent to the other, and combining the streams with agitation. The preferred apparatus comprises a reservoir 42 from which emulsion passes through the pipes 41, 19 to the two passages 21 and disperser tubes 23 and thence through the tubes 35 back to the reservoir, in which inclined baffles 38 impart a helical motion to the liquid. Each disperser tube 23 contains a shaft carrying two sets of helical impeller blades 26, 27; opposite the periphery of the blades 26 are inlet passages (not shown), which supply respectively material to be dispersed and dispersion medium. These materials are thus cut into sections by the blades and dispersed in the stream of emulsion, further agitation being effected by the blades 27.
