Abstract

<PICT:0495107/III/1> Materials, e.g. containing oils, syrups, or molten waxes are emulsified by being thrown by means of a high-speed rotating member against a surface from which it rebounds in a clearance space between the rotating member and the surface in a state of turbulence and simultaneously sheared by edges moving parallel with the said surface. Suitable apparatus comprises a rotor 5 fitted with helicoidal blades 6 co-operating with the casing 1. The ends 8 and 9 of the rotor are of conical form to provide suitable feed and outlet chambers. The materials are fed in through inlet pipe 3, and supplementary inlet 3a if desired, and are withdrawn at outlet 4. Valves may be used on the inlet and outlet pipes to regulate the flow. The rotor 5 may rotate at speeds of about 3000 revs./min. Specification 490,208 is referred to.
