Abstract
<PICT:0362430/III/1> Bituminous and other emulsions are produced by forcing the ingredients tangentially into a chamber whence they issue axially as a spray. As shown in Fig. 1 bitumen is melted in a steam-heated tank a and delivered by a pump d to a similarly heated vessel e containing a stirrer g. An emulsifier such as wool-fat, tallow oil or resin is added in the vessel e. Water or alkaline solution is heated in a vessel h and the two ingredients delivered by pumps i, i<1> to tangentially arranged nozzles in a chamber k whence the emulsion is delivered into a vessel l and drawn off through a pipe m. As shown in Fig. 4 the chamber k has tangential nozzles r, s and an axial nozzle w of diameter variable by the provision of replaceable annular plugs u.
