[Class 40 (v)] The carrier frequency of television signals is neutralized in or after the detector 10. The detecting-valve has two control grids 11, 12 to which the signals are applied in opposite phase. In such a circuit the carrier frequency can be removed without affecting the highest image frequency even when the two frequencies are close. One control grid 11 is connected to the anode 17 of the final valve of an intermediate-frequency amplifier, the second control grid is earthed as regards alternating-current through a condenser 18, and the cathode 15 is connected to the mid-point 21 of two equal anode resistances 8, 9 in series. Alternatively a potentiometer is connected across the anode circuit and the cathode of the detector connected to the centre. A cathode-ray tube or other light relay may be connected directly to the rectifier. According to modifications : a separate valve is used for phase reversal, Fig. 3 (not shown) ; a detector with only one control grid is used, and a potentiometer in its anode circuit is so adjusted in a balanced circuit that no carrier frequency occurs at its output tapping, Fig. 4 (not shown).
