Abstract

<PICT:0437512/III/1> <PICT:0437512/III/2> The drying-zone of a rotary kiln, more particularly adapted for the manufacture of cement by the wet process, is in the form of a helical channel, containing loose bodies 8 of heat-resistant material, and closed at its lower end by a perforated partition 7 which prevents the bodies from passing into the main portion of the kiln, but does not obstruct the flow of the dried material. The bodies become coated with slurry and drying is effected by the kiln gases which pass through the partition 7 and flow in counter current to the material. The channel may be formed by a single of double helix 4, and may be divided into sections by further partitions, each section having a charge of loose bodies, which may be graduated in size so that the relative movement between them decreases towards the main portion of the kiln. The helical partition may be rotated independently of the rotation of the kiln.
