Abstract
437,291. Massage appliances; administering magnetism. CHAPMAN, A. E., 125, Stanley Park Road, Carshalton, Surrey. April 27, 1934, No. 12725. [Class 81 (ii)] A massage appliance intended to impart magnetic massage comprises a cylinder a of magnetized material having rounded ends a<1> and covered with rubber or enamel b to prevent removal of static electricity during use. The covering b may be formed with ribs c or with studs or may be of honeycomb formation. The cylinder a may be of reduced diameter at the centre f and may be rotatably mounted on a handle e. Alternatively a cylinder without rounded ends may be formed with end pins rotatably mounted on a yoke secured to a handle. In a modification the member a may be spherical and may be rotatably mounted on a handle by a pin passing diametrically through it or by forming in it a central spindle such as f. In another modification the member a comprises a rotatably mounted hollow shell. In further modifications the member may be of square, octagonal or other polygonal section or may be formed with longitudinal ribs or with hexagonal or like ends to modify the magnetic field. A ribbed magnet may be enveloped in a plain-faced cylindrical cover. In a construction comprising a cylindrical magnet with ribbed cover rotatably mounted in a yoke, the yoke may have a plate-like handle which can be inserted through a slot in a bar magnet, the magnet being supported by a flange on the handle close to the massage cylinder and reinforcing its magnetism, or, when reversed, acting as a keeper. The member a may be electrically magnetized by coils wound in an annular groove therein and connected through contacts and the handle to a source of direct, alternating or intermittent current. A condenser effect obtained by use of the insulating cover may be enhanced by applying a positive, negative, or alternating electric potential to the magnetized member. A number of members as described may be coupled together in use.
