437,029. Cutting webs. STEVENSON, H. J., 62, Burghley Road, Wimbledon Common, London, and THRISSELL ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., Thrissell Street, Bristol. April 23, 1934, No. 12170. [Class 31 (i)] In a machine in which a web is severed into lengths by knives on a pair of co-operating rollers 1, 2 and in which the lengths can be altered by means of a variable speed drive 20 while the speed of the knives at the moment of severing is kept equal to the speed of the web by adjustment of an elliptical gear train 15, 16, 17 relatively to the knives, intermediate gearing is provided between the roller 2 and the gear 15 to allow relative adjustment thereof. In one form, Fig. 1, the intermediate gearing comprises a spiral gear 12 on the roller shaft 9 and a co-operating spiral gear 13 mounted in a bearing 22 and slidable on the shaft 14 of the gear 15, being traversed by a handoperated screw 23. In another form, Fig. 4, the intermediate gearing comprises bevel gears 27, 28 mounted on the shafts 9, 14 and cooperating with bevel pinions 29, 30 mounted in a casing 31 adapted to be turned by a hand-operated worm 33 which engages teeth 32 thereon.
