Abstract

310,184. Woodhead, T. P. April 21, 1928. Roller mills.-In a coal or coke cutting machine of the kind in which the coal &c. is broken by rotary cutters fitted on parallel shafts 2, 3 which are geared together directly, one shaft 3 is mounted in slidable bearings 8 adapted to permit lateral movement of the shaft without affecting the position of the gears. Fast and loose pulleys 4, 5 are mounted on the shaft 2 and a pinion 6 drives a gear wheel 7 mounted on a hollow sleeve 14, Fig. 3, fixed to the casing 1. The shaft 3 passes through the hollow sleeve, the end being provided with a crank-arm 9 which engages within a slot 10 in the wheel 7 and forms the driving means for the shaft. Backlash between the crankarm and slot is prevented by a cam, eccentric or spring 12. Movement of the shaft 3 within the sleeve 14 occurs when the bearing 8 is adjusted and this movement does not affect the meshing of the gear wheels 6, 7.
