436,732. Suction cleaners. HOOVER, Ltd., Perivale, Middlesex.-(Hoover Co. ; North Canton, Ohio, U.S.A.) April 17, 1934, No. 11593. [Class 8 (i)] In a suction cleaner in which an agitator mounted in the suction nozzle is driven from the fan spindle by a belt passing along the suction passage, a removable converter can be inserted through an aperture in the lateral wall of the passage so as to communicate with the fan chamber while co-operating with fixed parts to cut off communication between the fan chamber and the suction passage. A suction cleaner comprises a fan chamber A and nozzle B, the lower end of the motor spindle being formed as a pulley C to receive a belt D<1> which passes along the suction passage and drives an agitator D mounted in the nozzle ; the rear end of the suction passage is enclosed by a pulley cover plate E fitting over the fan eye ; the pulley C is accommodated in an enlargement H, the wall H<1> of which fits around the back of the pulley and belt. The lateral wall of the cover plate E is provided with a socket E<1> for the end G of a hose G<1> carrying hand suction tools ; the insertion aperture is normally closed by a spring-pressed flap valve which is opened by insertion of the converter G. When in position the converter G communicates with the fan eye and co-operates with the fixed walls substantially to cut off communication between the fan eye and the suction nozzle B, as shown in Fig. 5. The converter is curved at G', Fig. 6, to correspond with the fan eye, is recessed or dented at G<3> to clear the belt D<1> and is stepped so that its portion G<4> clears the fan spindle. The converter is retained in position by a catch G<5> and may be inserted in a curved path instead of linearly as described above.
