[Class 100 (iii)] Matrices.-In order to facilitate the handling and alignment of matrices for casting italic or inclined characters, the front part 9, Fig. 4, of the matrix, which carries the character, is formed with inclined side surfaces, and the rear part 8 with vertical side surfaces. The upper and lower ears 3a, 3b, 4a are retained on both the inclined and the vertical part of the matrix, the upper ears 3a, 3<b> being in offset relation, and the lower ears 4a in alignment. The matrices are thus always supported in vertical position, and, during alignment, a direct upward pull is exerted on the matrices, owing to the ears 3b, 4a being in the same vertical plane. When the line is assembled, full contact is always maintained between both the inclined and vertical parts of adjacent matrices. Filling- pieces 21, 22, Figs. 5<a> and 6a, are placed at the ends of the line, to fill out the irregular sidefaces of the end matrices, and to co-operate with the vertical faces of roman matrices and of the vice-jaws B, C, Fig. 7. The opposite sides of the front body parts may be inclined in opposite directions, to accommodate roman characters which are wider at one end than at the other, as shown in Fig. 8, so that the characters may be more closely spaced.
