Abstract

436,454. Portable drilling machines. LUCAS, Ltd., J., Great King Street, Birming- ham, VIDAL, C. H., and GOSSLING, C. E., Rotax Works, Willesden Junction, London. April 11, 1934, No. 10907. [Class 83 (iii)] In a portable electric drilling-machine of the type in which the reaction of the drill feed is taken against an external support, a pair of telescopic screw-connected spindles are provided for the feed, one of which is held against endwise movement in the machine while the other co-operates with the external support, one spindle having mechanical means for driving it and the other being manually operable. The self-contained electric motor a drives through reduction gearing j the wheel o keyed to the socket spindle h. The end of the latter is slidably connected to the sun wheel m of an epicyclic train having a fixed internally toothed ring n and planet wheels l with spindles carried in an internally-screwed sleeve k. A rod t carrying a back centre s and hand wheel u is screwed at one end w to fit the internally-screwed sleeve k; when the latter is rotated from the spindle through the epicyclic train and rotation of the hand-wheel prevented, the machine is fed towards the work. The feed may be stopped by releasing the hand wheel, thus allowing the screwed rod to rotate with the sleeve. The wheel m has an extension z which serves as an ejector for the drill when the rod t is screwed up to the end of the sleeve.
