Abstract

224,336. Pelletier, J. E. Sept. 13, 1923. Hand and breast drills. -A portable valve grinder which can also be used as a brace for drilling, driving screws, &c., has a spindle 38 with a chuck to hold a valve-rotating or other tool and on this spindle is feathered a sleeve 36, having gears 35, 37 integral therewith, adapted to be moved axially by a frame 24 and locked by a spring catch 28. For drilling, the frame is locked in its higher position as shown, so that the gear 37 engages a gear 21 secured to a shaft 7 which is driven through bevels 14, 17 by a hand or power operated shaft 3. For grinding, the frame is locked in its lower position so that the gear 35 is engaged alternately by oppositelyrotating mutilated gears 18, 20 of which the latter is secured on the shaft 7 and the former is on a sleeve driven through bevels 16, 17. The gearing is mounted in a casing 13 having two handles, the upper one 12 alone being shown. Chucks.-The chuck has wedge-shaped jaws 55 which are hinged to spring-opened levers 44 and closed by a bevelled ring 53 which is moved axially by a sleeve 43 screwed on the body 42.
