Abstract

Objects such as pipe lines are protected by placing about them a flexible shield comprising fibrous material such as paper, felt, woven fabric or wood veneer impregnated with a synthetic resin which is cured prior to application of the shield to the object. The synthetic resin may be phenol-formaldehyde, urea-formaldehyde, phenol-furfurol or polybasic acid-polyhydric alcohol condensation products. Examples describe the preparation of fusible and infusible resins from phenol or cresol and formaldehyde or paraformaldehyde in the presence of sulphuric acid or sodium hydroxide.
