[Class 55 (ii)] A gas - scrubber comprising a main body of packing B consisting of superposed transverse tiers of thin laths with vertical flow of gas and liquor has relatively deep plates C arranged vertically side by side at the gas inlet in the path of the scrubbing liquid, the plates being spaced at a greater distance apart than the thin laths and having enlarged tops so that the plates C receive a greater proportion of scrubbing liquor per unit area than the laths B. The plates C have tops D of pear section and may be staggered to leave no vertical space between them, or the tops may be vertically slit and bent over so as to form alternately inclined rows of wings as in Specification 426,560, or the tops may have parallel inclinations like a venetian blind. When the gas inlet is at the bottom, the bottom edges of the deep elements are stepped downwardly away from the horizontal inlet; when the gas enters at the top, the top edges are stepped upwardly away from the gas inlet to assist uniform distribution of the gas. The liquor may contain lime or chalk. Specification 424,414 is referred to. According to the second Provisional Specification, the liquor is fed from a perforated plate on to a gridwork of bars of square crosssection.
