Abstract
665,326. Treating gases with liquids. C.D. PATENTS, Ltd. Oct. 24, 1949 [July 6, 1949], No. 17907/49. Class 55 (ii). [Also in Group XIII] In packing for scrubbing or cooling towers, distillation columns, &c., composed of successive grids of upright slats 12, the grids are spaced apart from <SP>3</SP>/ 16 to “ inch and their lower edges so shaped that dripping liquid falls freely drop by drop without formation of spray and each drop causes a ripple to be formed in the film on the slat beneath. The bottom edge of the slats is preferably serrated as by arcuate or triangular notches 13 to provide a series of drip points 14 and the top edge may also be serrated. The grids may be arranged so that the slats of adjacent grids are at right-angles to each other and those in every second layer lying in the same vertical planes. Or they may be staggered so that those in every fourth layer are coplanar. The grids may be spaced from one another by slotted distance-pieces 18 very few of which are required. Liquid may be distributed on to the topmost grid through vertical slots in the sides of supply troughs.
