[Class 55(ii)] Liquid is distributed in a packed tower by a series of gauze members arranged in a pattern dispersing it uniformly to collectors at spaced regions from which it flows along carriers defining regular flow paths in exposed streams towards the packing. A liquid feed distributer 12 to the packing 11 of a tower 10 comprises a column of superposed sheets 35 of wire gauze &c. corrugated to form V-shaped ridges 36 and furrows 37 with the crests of one sheet contacting and optionally spot welded to the troughs of the next sheet above. A supporting tray 45 is made up of a series of oblong sections 48 with central ribs 4 and separated by gaps 46, situated below every other ridge of the bottom sheet 35. Liquid collecting at the gaps is distributed to the packing by gauze sheets depending from the gaps and formed as alternating vertical and inclined sections 60, 63 with a set of four at each gap individually spaced at the packing which in the form shown comprises expanded metal sheets in face to face contact vertically arranged in the central portion of the tower, leaving side chordal sections 13 vacant. The sheets 35 and tray 45 extend completely across the tower and as shown are half as wide as the packing; the sections 63 of the sheets depending from the 'tray are placed so that the bottom sections 64 are the width of the packing. The end tray sections 49, 50. 51 and sheets 35 above them are stepped in width to effect proportionate distribution of liquid to the narrower width of packing below. Another form of distributer comprises a column of superposed horizontal gauze sheets each provided with regularly arranged depressions of conical, pyramidal or other shape, alternate sheets being reversed so that the depressions, project alternately upwardly and downwardly. Rods depend through holes at the apex of the depressions and discharge liquid on to the packing which may be of the form described in Specifications 603,156, 607,282, 607,283, 607,288 and 607,290. The rods may be fluted or of stranded wire or may comprise a group of rods which diverge at their lower ends to provide sub-divided streams.
