Abstract

434,581. Filters. ZAHM, E., 74, Jewett Avenue, Buffalo, New York, U.S.A. Nov. 28, 1934, No. 34175. [Class 46] A filter-press is built up of frames 45, Fig. 9, each of which has an inwardly-projecting flange 52 and a drainage member, comprising coarse wire fabric 54 with finer wire fabric 55 on either side, held against a shoulder 53 on the flange. Filter cloth is held against either side of the drainage member by rings 62, within which filter aid is deposited to form a filtering bed or layer. The frames are held in position between a fixed head 24, Fig. 6, and a movable head 25. Liquid admixed with filter aid is passed through ports 39 and distributed by baffle plates 451 within chambers 361 formed on the heads 24, 25 and flows thence through apertures 61 in the flanges 52 to the several chambers of the press. The filtrate from each drainage member is passed to a delivery manifold 78, Fig. 3, through a port 77 and a flexible hose 79 with sight glass 80 and control valve 81. The frames 45 are supported on rollers 88, 89, travelling on rails fixed to flanges on the side beams 22, 23 of the press frame. Two rollers are provided on one side and one on the other of each frame, and the rollers are adjustably connected to the frames so that the frames may be accurately positioned. Each frame has an air vent 75 and the distributing chambers 361 have connections 82, 821 for the supply of gas and cleansing liquid respectively. The movable head is also supported by rollers travelling on the rails on the flanges of the beams 22, 23.
