Abstract

434,350. Variable -speed friction gearing. HAYES, F. A., Middletown, New Jersey, U.S.A. Nov. 28, 1933, No. 33330. [Class 80 (ii)] [See also Group XXXII] A load - equalizing control - sleeve 13, between sets of rollers 5, 51, in a toric-disc gear, is provided with axial vibration -damp - ing means which are mainly inertial in character. In Fig. 1, an angularly-adjustable control-ring 131 secured to the sleeve 13, is provided with a vane 16, immersed in the gear-oil. A mass on the end of a blade-spring may replace the vane. In Figs. 4 and 6, the axial vibrations of the ring 131, through crank-pins 20, oscillate a spindle 21, carrying a flywheel, or fixed or adjustable flyweights 26. The spindle can yield slightly, axially of the gear, and after a predetermined yield, a collar 25 on the spindle contacts the fixed supporting boss 24, and provides additional friction damping. Specifications 392,589 and 415,076 are referred to.
