[Class 61 (ii)] The operating arms 1, 2, of a valve-spring lifter, which are pivoted together at 6 at their rear ends, are opened or closed step by step by a bell-crank lever one arm 10 of which is pivoted at 11 to the free end of the operating arm 2 while the bend pivots slidably in slots 13 in the operating arm 1 and the other arm 14 of the lever is connected to a ratchet lever 15 pivoted about and slidable along a pin 20 between the members of the operating arm 1. This arm, at its rear end, is widened to form side plates 3 between which a handle 21 is pivoted about a pin 23 below the pivot 6 of the operating arms 1, 2. Forward movement of the handle 21 engages an actuating pawl 25 with the teeth on the ratchet lever 15 to move it forwards and open the arms 1, 2, a holding pawl 24, rocking about the pivot 23, preventing its return. A spring 28, secured to the pivot pin 6 is controlled by an external lever to press the holding pawl on to the teeth or to leave it free to rise when the arms are being closed. a pin 5 connecting together the side plates 3 and disposed over a recess 32 in the actuating pawl 25 engaging that pawl, as the handle 21 is retracted, to hold it on to the ratchet lever when the pressure of the spring closes the arms 1, 2 ; at the same time, a boss 33 on the pawl engages the holding pawl 24 with the lever.
