This invention relates to valve-spring lifting tools such as are used for compressing the springs of gas engine valves to facilitate removal of the valve, and has for an object to provide an improved construction of tool for this purpose which will be simple in construction, strong and durable, and easily operated.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a device of this character which will comprise a small number of parts so arranged that opposed elements are duplicates of each other so as to reduce to a minimum the number of different parts which must be manufactured, and thus reduce the'number of tools and dies required for manufactur lt is another object of the invention to provide a simple and effective means for holding the spring-compressing aws to maintain the springs Compressed until the jaws are released.

Our improved tool comprises a pair of hand levers 5 pivoted together by means of a rivet 6. These levers each comprises a hand grip 7 and an arm 8 respectively located to the rear and forwardly of the pivot'6, but both on the same side of this pivot. The lever comprisesa singlepiece of metal-with the hand grip 7 substantially U-shaped in At-the point of thepivot 6 the extension 9 is offset at 10 which offsets engage each other when the levers are assembled giving a better bearing and spacing the remaining portions which cross each other'a slight dis tance so thatthey donot rub together, and also provide space for the catch 11 for holding the jaws separated.
Pivoted' to each ofthe arms 8 at the free ends thereof is a jaw supporting member 12. This member has a body portion substantially U-shaped in cross-section, and they are arranged with the Open sides opposed so that the arm 8 extends between the sides of this U-shaped portion and is pivoted thereto by the pivot 13. Each member 12 carries a jaw lt'which is preferably provided with an open-sided recess 15 for engaging about the valve stems withthe jaws between this spring and its abutment in the usual man ner. One side of the U-shaped body of the jaw support 12 is extended rearwardly,v as.
tension is connected by a-link 17 to the opposite lever, the link having pivotal connec- 7 tion with the extension at 18 and to the opposite lever at '19. It will be noted that the jaw supporting members 12 arereversed and arranged with their open sides opposed. This allows the use of duplicate structures for the two jaws so that they may be made with the same-tools.
It is preferred that the pivots 18 and 19 be substantially the same distance to the rear of the pivot 6 between the levers as the pivotal connections 13 are spaced forwardly of this pivot, so that when the hand grips are pressed together the jaws will be separated and the links 17 during this movement will maintain them in substantially parallel relation. As the links are freely pivoted to the jaw'supports and the levers there are no pin and slot connections required between the supports and the levers to allow for relative longitudinal movements as the levers are operated. This makes a very rigid construction vwhich is not liable to work loose and does not wear rapidly in operation.
The catch 11 is provided to hold the jaws in separated relation to prevent their closing under the action of the springwhen it is compressed. This catch comprises a lever pivoted to one of the levers.5, preferably on the same pin or rivet 19 by which a link'lr" is pivoted to this lever. At one side edge the catch is provided "with a series of notches 20 adapted to engage across-pin 21* in theopposite handle, it being understood that the lever projects into the space between the side portions of this grip. Having thus set forth the nature of our invention, what we claim is:
1. In a device of the character described, a
