HENRY CAMPBELL JnNrriNs, or r-rovn, ENGLAND.
DEVICE FOR COMPRESSING VALVE SBRENGS OF INTERNAL-COMBUSTION ENGINES AND FOR LIKE PURPOSES.
Application filed May 4, 1926, Serial No. 106,595, and in Great Britain December 7, 1925.
Vl`his invention relates to a device for litting and compressing the valve springs oit internal-combustion engines, whether on or ott the said engines, and other springs, of
the type which comprises a pair of bifurcated jaws between which the said springs are con'ipressed .for removal or replacement, placing between clips and other purposes, the said jaws being compelled to move parallel to each other by means of suitable linkworl; when being opened or closed.
The object therefore of this invention is to construct a spring litter and compressor which is operated by handles instead oi' a nut and screw which will compress a spring by either of the` methods above mentioned.
l attain this object by the` mechanism illustrated by the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 shows my improved device closed.
Fig. 2 shows the device with the jaws open and a spring between them ready for compression.
Fig. 3 shows the device with the jaws partly closed and the spring fully compressed between them.
Fig. 4 shows a spring being compressed between the upper jaw of the device and a part of the engine, the lower jaw bearing another part of the engine.
Fig. 5 shows an alternative method of connecting the handles to the arms carrying the jaws.
Fig. 6 is a plan of one of the arms and jaw.
The same numerals denote the same parts throughout.
1 and 2 are flat metal arms provided at one end with bifurcated jaws 3 and 4 at right angles to the plane of the arms 1 and2.
The arms 1 and 2 and the jaws 3 and 4 are compelled to move parallel to each other' when the jaws are approaching or receding from each other by means of the crossed links 5 and 6 which are pivoted to each other at 7 land to the arms 1 and 2 by pivot pins such as bolts, screws or the like, hereinafter referred to as bolts 8 and 9.
The links 5 and 6 are also pivoted by means o1 bolts 10 and 11 to the crossed handles 12 and 13, the bolts 10 and 11 sliding in the slots 14 and 15 in the arms 1 and 2. The bolts 10 and 11 may have brass collars thereon to enable them to slide easily in the slots 14 and 15.
The jaws 3 and 4 are preferably stepped or cranked as shown, andby bolting the links 5 and 6v to the arms. 1 and 2 and to the handles 12 and 13, the jaws 4may be reversed when desired by removing the bolts and turning the jaws .upside down and replacing the bolts.
y The jaws are shown in different positions in the ligures. ln Figs. 1,. 4 and 5 the steps in the jaws are parallel to each other and facing the same way.
in Figs. 2 and 3 the steps are shown tacing the same way but in the opposite direction to that shown by Figs. 1, 4 and 5, the
aws having been reversed.
The handles 12 and 13 are curved and preferably shaped as shown, and when the jaws are closed the handles assume the position shown by Figs. 1 and 5, and cross one another behind the pivot 16.
On pressing the handles together, the first movement ot the handles opens the aws, see Fig. 4, and to fully open the jaws the handles are pulled apart and assume the position shown by Fig. 2.
OnV again pressing the handles together the jaws are caused toapproach one another, see Fig. 3, the handles again crossingy one another behind the pivot 16.
A locking loop or ring 17 may be slipped over the handles to secure them in the position shown by Figs. 3 and 4 to hold a spring between the jaws when compressed, or between the jaw and a part of the engine, leaving the hands free to remove the cotter and valve.
In some cases I may pivot the handles to the front ends of the arms 1 and 2, as shown by Fig. 5.
In case it is desired to pivot the handles to the front ends of' the arms 1 and 2, instead or' pivoting them to the rear ends of the links 5 and 6, this may be done by re. moving' the bolts 10 and 11 andbolting the handles to the links and front ends of the arms `with the bolts 10 and 11, and replacing the said bolts with the bolts 6 and 9 to secure the rear ends of the links to the arms.
rlhis method ot attaching the handles gives a direct pressure on the jaws and the crossed links merely keep the arms 1 and 2 parallel to each other.
By means of this invention an easy and instantaneous lifting and compressing action may be obtained and the device may be constineted for various sizes of springs Within wide limits.
l. In a device ior compressing valve sin-ing;r of internal-eoinbustion engines and ior like purpose, the combination of two longitudinally slotted ainls having a bifureated jaw at one end of each :ii-'1n in a plane :it right angles to the plane oi' the arms, with a pair of crossed links pivoted to one another` at their point of intersection and detachably pi'voted at one end to the said arms,`the other end of said links being provided with bolts or the like sliding in the slots in said arins, and two curved crossed handles pivoted to one another at their pointof intersection, the shorter "ends of the said handlesbeingr adapted to be pivoted to the sliding ends of the crossed links by means of the said bolts or the like or to the bolts or the like by which the said links are pivoted to the front ends ol' said aiins, the said handles crossing one another behind. their point of intersection, all substantially asset forth.
2. A device for compressing' valve springs ol internal-eombustion engines and i'or like purposes, comprising' arins provided with bifnrcated jaws nioving parallel to one another, curved Crossed handles detachably pivoted to said arn'is, said handles being pivoted to one another at their point of inter section.
3. A device for compressing valve springs of internal-combustion engines and for like purposes, Comprising reversible arms provided With bifureated jaws moving parallel to one another, curved ero sed handles detaehably pivoted to said arms, said handles being pivoted to one another at their point of intersection and re-crossing one another behind the point of intersection.
