Abstract

253,808. Jenkins, H. C. Dec. 7, 1925. Pliers.-In a device for compressing valve springs of the kind comprising a pair of parallel jaws movable towards or away from each other by suitable linkwork, the free ends of the operating levers are capable of crossing each other sufficiently to enable them to be subsequently moved towards each other for forcing the jaws apart. The parallel jaw members 1 formed with bifurcated jaws 3 are connected together by two pairs of pivoted crossed links 5, the rear pivot pins 4 moving in slots 2. The hand levers 6 are pivoted together at 8 and to the pivots 4, and are shaped so that their rear ends cross when the levers are closed. Fig 3 shows the positions of the parts after closing the hand levers 6 to compress a valve spring between the jaws, a ring 9 on the hand levers maintaining the spring compressed. Fig. 4 shows the device in use for compressing a spring by an outward movement of one jaw with the other jaw bearing against an abutment, the jaws being moved apart by closing together the extreme recrossing ends of the hand levers. The pivot pin 8 may be adjustable in a series of holes to vary the amount by which the hand levers recross, and the jaw space may be varied by making the jaw members detachable from and reversible on the crossed links. In a modification the forward ends of the hand levers are connected to the forward ends of the crossed links.
