This invention relates to combination tools and has for its object the provision in a tool, primarily useful as a wrench, of lever operated linkage associated with the aws of such 5 a tool whereby the user may impart to the jaws through slight manual pressure a powerful gripping action suitable to make the tool also useful as pliers or a wire cutter as will hereinafter more fully appear. Figure 6, is a detail view in isometric projection with various parts separated and arranged to clearly show their order of assemblage,and Figures 7 and 8, are side views of other modified forms of my invention.
Referring to the drawings the preferred form of my invention will irst be described. Trench jaws similar to those in a common form of tool are designated by 1 and 2. The head or jaw 1, is provided with a shank 3, divided longitudinally or bifurcated to form the guides or furcations 4 and 5. The head and shank may be formed from a single piece of metal or built up of sections and held together as with rivets 6.
l Means for actuating the jaw 2, include a lever and' link hereinafter fully described which act against a normally stationary fulcrum member 7. In order to maintain an '1 aligned and compact assemblage of the shank,

These web portions are each substantially equal in thickness to the space between the furcations and in the adjacent ends of said members the web is recessed as at 10 and 11, to receive thel ends respectively of links 12 and 13, which links are similarly joined together as at 14, and of a thickness equal to the web portions so that the linkage formed by the several members may be aligned by the furcations and maintained thereby in operable assemblage. A handle 15, together with link 12, constitutes a lever for operating' the linkage of which it forms a part. Said handle may, as shown, be securedy as by rivets 16, to an extension 17 of the link 12, to receive which the handle is slotted at 18. rllhe walls of this slot 18, laterally support the adjacent part of link 13, and edgewise this link is further supported by the contiguous edge of the extension 17. As already intimated the link forming end 12, of the operating lever, is laterally contiguous to opposed walls ofthe furcations which latter form desirable support for the lever as a whole. Any suitable means may be provided for adjusting the fulcrum member 7 on the shank 3, and as shown, it comprises a. screw 19, carried by the fulcrum member and meshing with threads 20, on the shank. The screw is pivoted in a recess of the fulcrum member on a pin 21. As a cover 22, for the fulcrum member a suitably folded piece of sheet metal may be secured thereto by the rivets 23. One of these rivets may serve also to prevent displacement of the pivot pin 21. From the foregoing description it will be clear that the jaw 2 may be moved toward its complemental jaw by pressing handle or lever 15 from the position in which it is shown in Fig. 1 to the position in which it is shown in Fig. 3. The movement thus imparted is comparatively slight but entirely suilicient inasmuch as any required closure of the jaws may be approximated through screw adjustment of the fulcrum member along the shank 3. For a given location of the fulcrum member on the shank, the minimum distance between complemental jaws 2 and 3 is effected when the pivotal joints of the linkage involved are in dead center alignment and as will be seen from Fig. 3, this relation of the parts exists just before the handle l5, as at l5 (see Fig. 3) engages the shank as a stop against further closing m vement, so that when contact of the handle and shank is inally established the center joint le, of the links is suiciently beyond the dead center line as to lock the jaws upon a nut or other object with a vise-like grip. lilith the fulcrum member adjusted so that the aws will just come together when fully extended by the lever mechanism the action ot the tool is appropriate for cutting wire and it may be suited to this purpose by forming on the aws cooperative cutting edges Q4 and 25.
ln the modified form of my invention shown in Figs. l and 5, the action is identical with that ot the tool already described. lt diliers slightly in construction in that the links between the jaw 2G and iiulcrum member 27, are of dill'erent form and are connected to said members and to each other by pivot forming rivets. rl`he jaw link member 3, is Ill-shaped in transverse section and is ended to form a handle 29, which is dapted to shut over and enclose a part of lcrum member 27. rllhe ll-saaped section the for ard end of this handle or lever, raddles the movable jaw and is pivoted herto by rivet 30. Connection between lever 29 and ulcrum member 2T, comprises ojpositely disposed links 32 and 33, which are respectively pivoted to side flanges ot the lever by rivets 84 and 35, and to the tulcrum member by a rivet 35. rfhe la ter extends through the fulerum member and by securing the opposed links also serves to secure the casing 37 to said member.

T.Vhile l have shown several forms ot embodiment of my invention it is distinctly to be understood that many other chances may be made in the 'term and arrangement of the various elements without departure from the scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim is,-
l. A tool including in combination a head or having a bifurcated shank, a jaw channeled on opposite sides to receive respective furcations oi the shank, a fulcrum member similarly channeled to receive the shank, toggle linkage interposed between the fulcrum and members, means for securing the tulornm against movement relative to the shank, and means :tor moving the toggle linkage into susbstantially dead center alignment longitudinally of the shank.

A tool including in combination a head or jawrha-ving a bifurcated shank, av jaw channeled on opposite sides to receive respective urcations of the shank, a tulcrum member similarly channeled to receive the shank, toggle linkage connect-ing the ulcrum and channeled aw member held in operative relation by and between the nrcations, means 'for securing the fulcrum against movement relative to the shank, and means for operating the toggle linkage.
3. A tool including in combination a head or jaw having a bifurcated shank, a. jaw channeled on opposite sides to receive respective furcations oil the shank, a fulcrum member similarly channeled to receive the shank, toggle linkage connecting the ifnlcrum and channeled jaw member, and a easing secured to the fulcrum member and `:rtending over the furcations.

5. A tool including in combination a head or jaw having a bifurcatet shank, a aw channeled to receive respective fureations et the shank, a fulcrum member similarly channeled to receive the shank, and aw actuating means interposed between the and fulcrum members, said means including a lever which at one end is laterally contiguous to and supported by walls of the turcations.
6. A tool including in combination a head or jaw having a bifurcated shank, a jaw: channeled to receive respective furcations of the shank, a ulcrum member similarly channeled to receive the shank, toggle linkage interposed betwen the jaw and fulcruni members, and a handle associated with the toggle linkage and movable toward the shank to close the jaws, said handle and shank forming stop means operable to lock the toggle linkage in substantially dead center alignment.
