[Class 94 (i)] The closed ends of packets are subjected to pressure to ensure adhesion, and the packets are delivered in numerically equal groups. The packets P are fed in succession between upper and lower chain conveyers 10, 11 having pushers 22 to effect the feed and rollers 23 resting on the ends of the packet. The upper run of the chain 11 is supported by a bar 16, and the lower run of the chain 10 is not supported so that its weight is applied through its rollers 23 to keep the folds of the packet in position. When four packets have arrived at positions P, shown in plan in Fig. 3, a transfer member 30 is rocked by arms 32, 40 to transfer them as a group to positions P<1> on a platform 50. The continued travel of the chains 10, 11 cause an oblique movement. Successive movements of the transfer member feed the groups to positions P<2> and finally into the bite of endless belts, of which the lower belt 61 is shown in Fig. 3. The belts engage the tops and bottoms of the packets and are moved at a speed which causes gaps I of about 25 per cent of the dimension of a packet measured in the direction of its movement. The upper belt bears on the folded tops of the packets and is pressed into position by a number of weighted rollers loosely mounted on spindles above the lower lap. The wide delivery belts may be replaced by a number of narrow belts.
